Learn about what features to look for in a VoIP phone service, and how businesses are using Dialpad as an all-in-one communications platform that includes an enterprise VoIP phone system.

What is a VoIP phone system?

VoIP, or Voice over Internet Protocol, is a technology that allows you to make and receive phone calls via an internet connection.

Unlike old telephone systems and analog phone calls, VoIP doesn’t need a phone line or cables or clunky hardware. All you need is the Internet.

👉 Dialpad tip:

If you’re interested in Voice over IP, though, then what you may actually be looking for is a UCaaS or unified communications as a service platform. (More on that here.) UCaaS solutions combine different communication channels, including VoIP phone calls, team messaging, video conferencing, and even faxing, into a single platform.

Why use Dialpad for your VoIP service?

Single Item Card Add a Phone Number

It scales with you

With a VoIP phone service like Dialpad, you get set up much more quickly than with a traditional phone system. Plus, it grows with your business while preventing overbuying or overprovisioning of services (which also helps you cut costs). Add—and remove—users as you grow or adjust staffing, manage your phone numbers, and more, right in your online dashboard.

Phone call on desktop mobile app Single Item Card

No hardware

You don't need hardware to make VoIP calls with Dialpad, which makes things cheaper and more convenient. Dialpad releases features directly to you, with no server maintenance or IT involvement, and your employees don’t have to re-learn the software repeatedly. Just use your existing mobile devices, IP desk phones, and computers.

Single Item Card security settings

Robust security

Not only do you have in-call security controls like the ability to mute participants, remove unwanted guests, and more, Dialpad also has robust encryption and security standards. It's used by businesses and organizations across highly regulated industries like law, healthcare, real estate, and more.

Single Item Card Live call to intl number

Crystal clear call quality

Dialpad’s unique split cloud architecture lets you make high-definition phone calls across different devices, from around the world, and long-distance rates are cheaper too. (The more amazing thing is that Dialpad can provide crystal-clear call quality with fewer data centers compared to other VoIP phone providers because we’ve designed our telephony system more efficiently.)

👉 Dialpad tip:

To be fair, no matter how good of a VoIP solution you have, your call quality will suffer if you don’t have a reliable Internet connection. If you do need an Internet upgrade, T-Mobile and Dialpad's partnership gives you lightning-fast 5G and Dialpad's unified communications platform in one affordable package.

Simple call routing

If you get lots of incoming calls, you need an auto attendant and/or call routing feature, which greets your callers and lets them route themselves to the right agent or person instead of having a receptionist manually do call routing for you. Single Item Card Call Recordings

Call recording

What's unique about Dialpad is it gives you unlimited call recordings—and real-time transcriptions. Whether you need to do customer interviews, want to do quality assurance, or just need records of transactions over the phone, you can record and listen to calls easily in Dialpad.

Single Item Card Forward a Voicemail

Voicemail and visual voicemail

Sometimes, you just aren’t able to listen to all your voicemails. (Maybe you’ve got back-to-back meetings all day.) With Dialpad, your voicemails are automatically transcribed and emailed, with caller ID, right to you. You can easily play back stored voicemails, delete old ones, read the transcripts, and even forward them to colleagues.

If you have a contact center or call center team, Dialpad also has a contact center product that's fully integrated into its platform. Frequently asked questions about VoIP phone systems

What’s the difference between VoIP and PBX phone systems?

Basically, private branch exchange (PBX) is a more traditional type of on-premises phone system that requires hardware in your office. They used to only be able to make phone calls internally, but today, PBX phone systems allow you to make external calls too.

While VoIP and PBX are not mutually exclusive (PBX is a type of phone system while VoIP is a type of technology—that some PBX phones use), there are some differences to bear in mind. VoIP doesn’t need you to have on-premises phones or hardware—usually, it’s hosted in the cloud and lets you make phone calls over the internet on your cell phone or computer.
