Software eats business telephony

Leveraging modern web technology and the Google Cloud Platform, Dialpad has reimagined what communications means to enterprise—delivering rapid release cycles, global scale, and a modern user experience.

Rapid release cycles

Your phone gets cooler—every week

Modern consumer services, like Facebook and Google, have discovered that both users and technology benefit from continuous improvement, not wide-sweeping changes rolled out quarterly or annually. Dialpad brings this concept to the enterprise, delivering faster updates that are easier for users to adopt and provide ongoing stability with zero downtime.

Not all cloud is created equal

Innovating with Google Cloud Platform

Dialpad’s Split-Cloud infrastructure decouples voice media from the business applications we build. Our software cloud is built on the Google Cloud Platform, which acts as the brain for our telephony network. We designed our software with modern cloud architecture to optimize deployment, innovation, and maintenance.

Software-defined communications

It’s not a cloud PBX, it’s software

Cloud PBX systems still have the inherent problems of traditional PBX’s—scalability and deployment problems, slow innovation, and global connectivity issues—they’re just hosted somewhere else. Dialpad eliminates these challenges with a software-first approach, using our own telephony engine for the back-end switching, and web-based technology for the front-end application.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are releases deployed?

Unlike traditional cloud architecture, releasing new software doesn’t require us to take the your server offline for maintenance. We push releases directly to the Google Cloud Platform, and in turn, directly to your users. Users simply see an ‘update is available’ bar at the top of their app, encouraging them to reload the app when they have a second–that’s all it takes. Releasing features in smaller, more incremental stages is much safer and more stable, while creating a better user experience. For major new features, we also send notices to admins and provide in-app onboarding tools for users.

Is Dialpad built on top of another communications platform, like Twilio or Google Voice?

No. Dialpad’s founders have been innovating with VoIP technology since the very beginning at Yahoo Voice and Google Voice, and have used that expertise to design and build our own modern communications platform. We leverage the Google Cloud Platform to host our applications and have our own private voice network for handling media.

How does Dialpad’s innovation differ from other cloud phone system providers?

Dialpad is built differently, using modern Split-Cloud architecture and software-first design. This enables us to quickly build modern features, like simultaneous ringing and call controls across endpoints, and provide superior voice quality, even in low-bandwidth situations. We don’t tie customers to ‘servers’ or ‘pods’, so we can deploy globally and release features weekly, with greater scalability and lower cost. We’re faster and leaner, so your company can be more agile, cost-effective, and productive.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Dialpad’s cloud architecture differ from other Unified-Communications-as-a-Service (UCAAS) providers?

Dialpad has the benefit of being built in the time of modern cloud architecture (we launched Dialpad in 2015), so we designed around new cloud systems to optimize deployment, innovation, and maintenance. This means Dialpad isn’t created as an ‘instance’ for customers that are tied to a specific server, virtual machine, or ‘pod’ which hosts all software and media in one location. Decoupling software and media, and leveraging microservices, let’s us build more scalable, robust, and flexible systems.
Our founders’ extensive experience in telecommunications allowed us to seamlessly integrate with traditional telephony (the PSTN). Other modern communications software (ie. Skype for Business/Microsoft Teams, Cisco Spark, etc) that use modern architecture require complex hybrid approaches or simply aren’t able to integrate with PSTN.

Why does Dialpad use a Split-Cloud architecture? Why decouple software from media?

Simply put: better quality, redundancy, and innovation. For unified communications, software quality and voice quality are both essential–so we’ve chosen best-in-class cloud hosting for each. We use the Google Cloud Platform for hosting our web-based applications, as they’re proven leaders in web. For voice media, we use a dedicated media network, as this provides the lowest latency and best connectivity.
Decoupling software from media provides greatly increased redundancy. In the unlikely event of an data center outage, our software cloud will reroute calls automatically through other available data centers.
Lastly, separating software from media lets us innovate at web-speed. We are not bound by traditional telephony hardware constraints, and can build and innovate freely on the Google Cloud Platform.

Do we require a dedicated MPLS connection for our enterprise to connect to Dialpad? How do we ensure quality of service (QoS)?

No, you do not need a dedicated MPLS connection. Improvements in internet bandwidth combined with advancements in audio-encoding technology means that HD quality calls can travel over your existing internet network. From there, calls that have to travel a far distance to other offices leverage Dialpad’s MPLS connections. This saves you the headache and expense of complex QoS requirements, and provides equal or better quality. We do recommend a bandwidth of 100 kbps per voice connection and 500kbps per video connection for optimal quality, which is already available in most offices today.
